Picture this: Finsbury Park. 45,000 roaring Kasabian fans. The bass is vibrating in your chest, the energy is electric, and me and my mate decide we are doing what any self-respecting 50-blah-year-old music lovers do - we are heading for the front.
Except, we didn't just find the front. We accidentally stumbled straight into the belly of the beast: The Mosh Pit.
Now, the Weather Woolly in my head immediately looked around startled. Fifty-something women are not "supposed" to be in the pit. The old childhood script whispered that we were out of place, exposed, and an easy target to get knocked flat on our faces.
But then? The absolute magic of the universe happened.
Instead of being shoved aside, the young lads around us - including my son Ollie, his mates, and a bunch of towering, sweaty, fabulous strangers - looked at us and decided we were the VIPs of the circle.
At first, the old hyper-vigilance kicked in. Are they being patronising? Are they looking down on us? Not a chance. It was pure, unadulterated respect.
By the time the encore hit, we had a human shield of 6 to 8 young lads completely circling us, jumping like madmen, keeping us totally safe while we all sang “I’m on Fire” at the top of our lungs. We didn't just survive the pit; we commanded it.
🐺 The Howlz Takeaway With a Cider (obvs):
Getting older doesn't mean retreating to the back row of your own life. Sometimes, your age is your absolute superpower. It earns you a level of respect and space you didn't even know you could claim.
If you are standing on the edge of a metaphorical mosh pit today - whether it's a new career move, a lifestyle shift, or just standing up for your own boundaries - do not back away. March straight to the front. You might be surprised by exactly who stands up to protect your circle.
High five to the Finsbury Park Pit Protection Squad. You boys are top tier. 🤜🤛
